VICE CHAIR

What do you do when you are not playing chess?

During the week I work in banking and at the weekend I accompany my children to their activities.

What do you most like about chess?
Every game is different!

Why did you join the club?
My nearest club met on Wednesdays which was less convenient for me than Fridays.

What’s the best thing about being a member?
Meeting like-minded people, playing and winning together as a team, and being able to coach the next generation of chess players.

Tell us something about your experience and involvement at the club.
I captain our highly successful first team in the Kent League, I coach our advanced group of junior players, and I’m the club’s Vice Chair. From next year I’m hoping to represent the England Seniors team in international competitions.

Who is your chess hero?
Greek top player GM Ioannis Papaioannou – he is a great chess teacher, his positional playing style is similar to mine, and over the last few years I’ve learnt a lot from his video tutorials on modern-chess.com.

What chess book have you found most helpful?
Garry Kasparov’s five My Great Predecessors books provide an excellent overview of the history of chess since the 19th century.
