What do you do when you are not playing chess?
I am a retired chartered accountant who spends his time with family. I enjoy gardening.
What do you most like about chess?
I like chess because the learning never stops. Chess is a lake in which an elephant may bathe and at which a gnat may drink – Indian Proverb.
Why did you join the club?
I joined the club to play over-the-board chess with other players and to improve my play.
What’s the best thing about being a member?
The best thing about being a member is the general camaraderie and the chance to play in tournaments.
Tell us something about your experience and involvement at the club
I am treasurer of Sevenoaks chess club and enjoy the challenges.
Who is your chess hero?
Capablanca, Tal and Fischer are all my heroes but my number one is Morphy who saw much further than anyone else.
What chess book have you found most helpful?
My favourite chess book must be My 60 Memorable Games by Bobby Fischer. It showed another side of him – he could be difficult and demanding but who knew that he could also be humble and appreciative of skill in others? And the chess is wonderful and well annotated.
